More Size of a Cow (FCoE)

PackRat has posted on The FCoE Forecast; an excellent summary of the current/future landscape of FCoE and other protocols going forward.

I'd certainly forgotten about AoE (ATA over Ethernet), I remember reading articles about in the Linux Journal sometime ago but it's an interesting protocol and yes, could have an impact in the SOHO environment but at the moment, not really seeing any products with it.

I think the initial deployments of FCoE will be Top of Rack switches which allow cable-complexity within rack to be substantially reduced; perhaps we will see things like Virtual Connect modules from HP for their blades which offer FCoE.  This could happen relatively quickly and does not really impact the existing Data Centre infrastructures; as refreshes start to happen, consideration will be made as to what to refresh the environments with. Cisco are being very aggressive in their positioning of DCE and are throwing some very attractive prices around.

I'd expect all of the major array vendors to have FCoE available in their arrays in the next twelve months; now this may not be in their current arrays as there is at least one array vendor which is due a refresh in short order and retro-fitting may not be the order of the day.

The impact of FCoE on IP-based storage across the piece might be interesting; there could be an impact on NAS in the enterprise as well. If you can deploy block-based storage on a converged  infrastructure and you can do it quickly and easily, why pay the NAS tax?
